I’m sure just about anyone who’s in to cars has heard of “Pebble Beach”. For many of us it’s the cars we can’t afford, at an event that is priced just high enough to make us think twice about attending. You could say this was done on purpose, but then that wouldn’t explain the Thursday tour at all. Ah yes, Thursday that magical day when quite a few of the Pebble Beach cars attempt to win some extra points with the judges and drive their cars around 17 mile drive with a stop for lunch in Carmel-by-the-sea.
If you arrive at Pebble Beach early enough you can take a stroll through the cars as they are staged and ready for their tour. Don’t spend too long here though. At 9:00 AM the tour departs, and for this you will want to be somewhere road side. Seeing these cars in action is better then seeing them on the coast wrapped in that early morning mist anyway. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.
Eventually the cars make their way in to Carmel, but this is no secret. The cars are mobbed with people in a way that you really just have to see to believe it. Just don’t wait all day trying to get a shot of any single car here. At 2:00 PM lunch is over and the cars are heading back to Pebble Beach for some champagne. Some owners toasting the safe arrival of their cars, and some probably trying to forget the tow truck ride back. While you’re in Carmel, don’t forget to take a walk around the outskirts of the Ocean Avenue festivities. There are always hidden “Easter Eggs” of the automotive variety to spot parked among the common cars.
